Tarporley, Eaton and Tilstone circular

We stroll through Tarporley village through a field and across the golf course on public footpaths to reach the pretty village of Eaton. Quiet country lanes lead to Tilstone Hall and Lodge. Tilstone House is a neo-Tudor mansion was built in 1888 by Sir Gilbert Greenall, an Old Etonian baronet and later the 1st Baron Daresbury, as a hunting lodge.

In Tarporley, we walk up Park Road by the side of the Cottage hospital reaching a path across a field to Cobblers Cross Road and then walk across Portal golf course on a public footpath to Sapling Lane. The Portal golf course is in beautiful parkland and is crossed by 2 public footpaths. On a clear day there are good views to Beeston Castle in the West, Jodrell Bank in the East and over the South Cheshire plain. This leads into the village of Eaton with its attractive timber-framed Church House, farms and the Plough Inn. We will stop for morning coffee in Eaton village.

Winterford Lane is a quiet country lane leading to Brains Lane which takes us to the back of Tilstone Hall and lodge. Tilstone Hall is surrounded by attractive woodland, a new equestrian arena and fields. We take footpaths (which can be muddy in Autumn) back to Tarporley village. If the footpaths are waterlogged, we will remain on Brains Lane until the A49 for a short stretch back to Lodge Lane rejoining our walk at Bowmere Road in Tarporley.

The Rising Sun offers good quality and reasonably priced Sunday lunch, and I will book a table if anyone is interested in joining me for lunch.
