This walk starts and ends at the Bluebell cafe. We walk through woodland paths and then through the village of Barrow, past the primary school, to join Ferma lane. We then join the footpath past Ferma wood before crossing fields alongside the river Gowy to make our way to Plemstall church, where we will stop for coffee. St Peter’s Church, Plemstall is a National Heritage Grade 1 listed building and is situated in an isolated spot at the end of a country lane near Mickle Trafford. The church sits on an ‘island’, surrounded by meadows, that were once marshes, lying either side of the river Gowy (this means that the paths may be muddy in places!) The church original church dates from the 12th centrury but was rebuilt in the 15th century. The site dates back to St Plegmund who lived as a hermit in a cell on ‘The Isle of Chester’ before becoming the archbishop of Canterbury in the year 890.
After coffee, we cross fields and tracks to walk to Station lane, past the old railway station (‘Barrow for Tarvin’) which closed in 1953. We end by walking along Broomhill lane to return to Bluebell café – the café is part of the Barrowmore Estate which a charity that supports vulnerable adults.
Please let me know if you want to stay for lunch at the end of the walk or just to join us for lunch so that I can book tables.
