The walk begins at the end of the gated minor road leading to Llyn Eigiau high above the Conwy valley. After a 2km warm up on a level track, the path becomes rougher and less distinct, climbing through heather onto the broad NE ridge of Pen Llithrig y Wrach which we follow to its summit, a fine view point overlooking Llyn Cowlyd.
A steep descent to the bwlch is followed by a further steep ascent to the next summit of Pen yr Helgi Du, another fine view point above Cwm Eigiau. From here the ridge narrows and the next descent has a little exposure and may appear intimiating at first but there are no difficulties and Bwlych Eryi Farchog at the head of Cwm Eigiau is soon gained. The continuation on to Carnedd Llewelyn involves a short scramble up a broad, rocky step before a gradual ascent to summit itself and the high point of the walk.
We then head NE towards Foel Grach for a short distance before turning east to cross a broad, flat area which leads to the final ridge section of the day, Cefn Tal-llyn-Eigiau. A gradual descent brings us to an easy track which leads around the end of the ridge back to the cars.
