Red: Alport Castles & Grains in the Water

3 November 2019 08:00-17:00

Alport Castles & Grains in the Water 3rd November 2019
Grade: Red Number of dogs allowed: None

We haven’t walked this route in 6 years so time for another go, albeit in the reverse direction. On this route previously we have been fortunate to spot a snow hare bounding across the snow dusted moorland.

From the car park we walk down the A57 for a short distance before branching off to our left through woodlands and then fields following the course of the Roman Road before kissing the A57 at Hayridge Farm.

Here we turn north along the farm road to Alport Farm where we turn to the east and climb up on to the ridge (484m) at Alport Castles. It’s now a north westerly route along the ridge to the trig point then on to Gletherin Clough. We descend the clough for a short distance then continue our north westerly route below the ridge top until we reach Grains in the Water. Turning west we cross The Swamp (hint) then follow Hern Clough to the Pennine Way.

The route is now easier as we head south along the Pennine Way to Old Woman where we turn left to reach the A57. It’s another small section of road before we head off right following Lady Clough as it winds itself below the road through woodland until we reach the car park.
