Red: Sunday Alport Castles & Grains in the Water

1 November 09:30-16:00

Alport Castles & Grains in the Water 1st November 2020
Grade: Red Number of dogs allowed: None

Do not walk if you are feeling unwell. Carry your own hand sanitiser. In case of an emergency ensure you have with you a face mask and first aid pack.

Inevitably, the route will go through gates and over stiles that other people will have touched. It may have narrow sections that mean you will be passing close to other people

This is a great Red walk with fine views in England! and reasonably close by!

From the car park we cross the A57 descend into the wood and follow Lady Clough N re-joining the A57 for a short road section to Doctor’s Gate. We climb steadily following the path to Old Woman and then turn NE along the Pennine Way through our high point and on to Hen Clough. We take an E direction along a path, indistinct at times, through The Swamp (hint) to Grains in the Water. The ground starts to fall away to our right as we walk high along the edge of the River Alport valley. We cross Miry Clough continuing to Glethering Clough where we head to the trig point on the moor. Our route now takes us SE to Birchin Hat and on to Alport Castles. Here we descend to Alport Farm. We follow the farm road almost to the A57 before turning W at Hayridge Farm and follow the path skirting Cowms Moor and on to a Roman Road through the woods before a short section of the A57 back to the car park.
