No dogs allowed
This walk takes us through Bilberry wood on the Hawarden Estate – home to the Gladstone family of Prime Minister W. E. Gladstone fame. Cherry Orchard Road then leads us beside the wood to its far end. We pass through the woodland again on a good road, until we reach a section of the walk which follows footpaths through pasture and country lanes.
Eventually we pass through a more modern housing estate in Ewloe for half a mile – the boring bit – but soon find ourselves back in open fields. A pretty lane leads us back into Hawarden itself for the final stretch.
Just before we return to the car park the route passes the end of Church Lane, which leads down to Gladstone’s Library and St. Deiniol’s church – both worth a visit.
Assume completing the walk before lunch, which leaves options for visiting ‘Food for Thought’ (the café at Gladstone’s Library), a picnic in St. Deiniol’s churchyard, or the café at the Hawarden farm shop (1 mile east from the village on the B5125).
