Blue+: Llantysilio  Mountain

13 October 09:30-14:45

Llantysilio  Mountain 13th October 2019
Grade: Blue+ Number of dogs allowed: None

Leaving the carpark we head East along The Dee Valley Path towards Rhewl. At the church we turn North and start climbing through woodland before meeting a path that leads us towards Maesyrychen Mountain. We head first Northeast, then Northwest past spoil tips of Berwyn Quarry before reaching open heather clad moorland, passing numerous grouse butts. Our path takes us above the Horseshoe Pass road before turning West to reach our first peak, Moel y Faen (548m). We head along the ridge (see pictures) first descending then climbing (passing the prehistoric religious round barrow of Gribin Oernant) to our high point of the day, the cairn on Moel y Gamelin (575m). Another steep descent, then a climb brings us to the prehistoric defensive hillfort of Moel y Gear (504m). We now head Southwest for our final peak, Moel Morfydd (549m). From here we head south downhill towards the River Dee reaching an ancient green drove road now part of The Dee Valley Way, past the settlements of Cymmo and Acer-ddu before reaching our starting point at the 14th century drover’s inn complete with ancient sheepfold and hopefully open for refreshments.
