Do not walk if you are feeling unwell. Carry your own hand sanitiser. In case of an emergency ensure you have with you a face mask and first aid pack.
Inevitably, the route will go through gates and over stiles that other people will have touched. It may have narrow sections that mean you will be passing close to other people.
This walk starts and ends at the layby on the A49 at Tiverton. After a short meander through Tiverton village, we head NW to Town Fields and then SW to Pudding Lane. Here we join the Sandstone Trail and follow it down to Wharton’s bridge where we will have a coffee stop.
We follow the canal east to the A49. At this point, 4.4km into the walk, there is the option, for those who only want a very short walk, to return the short distance to Tiverton up the A49 (there is a pavement).
The walk continues along the canal past Beeston Iron lock and Stone Lock to Tilston. Here we leave the canal and head north up the lane to pick up paths across fields back to Tiverton for the garden picnic.
At the time of the recce, no livestock were encountered on the route.
Ground conditions are dry and firm underfoot. Vegetation isn’t too intrusive but, if you wear shorts, you will have to expect the occasional brush with a nettle.
