To World’s End and back

A varied walk from Llangollen ranging from peaceful woodlands of the Eglwyseg valley through the impressive limestone escarpment onto open moorland across Eglwyseg Mountain. Never difficult or steep and utilising good paths, this walk is relatively close to home for the short November days.

A short climb northwards out of Llangollen over the lower flanks of Castell Dinas Bran (more of that later) will serve as a warm up before a meander across a few fields leads to the good and fairly level path above Valle Crucais Abbey. Initally open, the path soon enters peaceful woods as it trends northwards to the Eglwyseg river. After emerging onto a quiet lane, a path across farmland leads to a rickety bridge with a few pieces missing albeit still functional for the purposes of river crossing. After crossing the main valley and ascending to reach Offa’s Dyke path we follow it north eastwards towards World’s End as it traces an impressive balcony line beneath the limestone cliffs. Eventually a higher path splits from Offa’s Dyke and climbs slowly and without difficulty to snake a way through the crags to emerge onto the heathery moorland plateau of Eglwyseg mountain a short distance before World’s End. We follow the edge round to pick up our return path which leads over rolling moorland back towards Llangollen. A very gradual and gentle descent with good views over Castell Dinas Bran perched on its hill top brings us down to the minor road. Now follows the steepest climb (and steepest descent) of the day as we take the shortest way back to cars, tea shop or pub via the impressive ruins of Castell Dinas Bran.
