Llangollen nestles at the foot of these hills so, after leaving the riverside carpark, we have a short distance through the town to loosen up before we ascend steeply at first on road and field to meet the North Berwyn way which we follow uphill through woods. The gradient soon eases to become a pleasant walk across open moorland through heather to the summit of Vivod Mountain (559m) and the high point of the day. We continue in a SE direction along a rough and boggy path before heading up through rough, pathless heather to the Biddulph Tower on the summit Y Foel.
We descend to meet the Llwybr Ceiriog Trail, which we follow for 2km along a country lane high above the Ceiriog valley. Leaving the high road, we head easily downhill across the steep slopes of the Llangollen valley with good views over Llangollen to the Eglyswyg valley and Llantysilio Mountain. The gradient beomes steeper and, lower down, the path is badly eroded from storm damage (walking poles will be helpful) before we emerge on a lane in the valley. We then climb across the north side of Pen-y-coed to emerge on the A5 and walk back through the town to the car park.
